Frankincense tears are composed of resin derived from Boswellia carteri, a tree species indigenous to Arabia, India, and northern Africa. These small, thorny, shrub-like trees require 8 to 10 years to mature before the milky resin can be hand-harvested.
Highly aromatic, frankincense granules are commonly burned over smoldering charcoal bricks as incense.
